I read about a new doughnut spot in Midtown, Doughbots. I love doughnuts and I was so excited that I dragged my family into the car and we drove from Rancho Cordova to Midtown . Just for doughnuts, no other reason. This is not a short trek and yes, gas is about $3.70 a gallon. I was super excited. I couldn't wait to sink my teeth in a beautiful pink glazed puff of fried dough as pictured in the local monthly magazine. When I saw the people lined up at the cash register, I was confident that my anticipation was not in vain. This was a place that was introducing the famous maple bacon doughnut to Sacramento. This is the place the press was calling hip.
My first sign of worry was that the display case did not contain the pretty pink doughnut from my visions. In fact, only about 6 doughnut choices were available, 2 with bacon. Okay, whatever. Not the end of the world. We were there on a Sunday at 10:30am. Shop hours are 5am to noon. Small window. Maybe we needed to be there at 5am sharp for the pink one, or the Joy of Almond, or the Myer Lemon Creme filled. Picking our doughnuts, my disappointment emerged. Was it worth the drive on a Sunday morning when families really don't take Sunday drives anymore? I ended up spending $9 on 6 doughnuts; 2 maple bacon, 1 peanut butter an jelly, and 3 Myer lemon glazed. The Myer lemon glazed were the best flavor of the 3. It was tangy and I could see slivers of lemon in the glaze. The peanut butter and jelly was a jelly filled doughnut with peanut butter on top. The famous maple bacon was okay. The bacon was a little too thick for me; it was more like ham chunks. On a doughnut scale of 1 to 10, they were a collective 7.
There was a sign that said 20 minute wait for more doughnuts. We were there well over 20 minutes, but no new doughnuts showed up. I was disappointed. Even after the 3 of us shared the 6 doughnuts, we craved something more. Something was missing, unfulfilled. Will I go back? Probably. In a month or so, after my disappointment has waned. I really hope I don't have to be there at 5am for the pink one.

The American River
This is a small part of the American River as it runs through Folsom. It is amazingly beautiful and a source of pride for many people who live here. When I first moved to Sacramento in 1996, the American River and the Sacramento River became a couple of the best things about living here. The bike/running trails are endless, the parkway is amazing, and it is wonderful to see all the people who are able to enjoy the rivers that run through our city. Whenever I see the American River I am home; it always welcomes me.
